Artist Statement:

My initiation in art began by writing graffiti. My graffiti paintings have been a means through which I implant a portion of myself into a public setting. They act as scattered advertisements carrying symbolic identity but most importantly they become small manifestations of who I am as an artist. They share with the public my aesthetic inclinations and technical abilities. The many clean sharp lines and shapes from which they are made up are individually abstract yet when seen from afar they become whole; they unfold my devotion and attention towards balance, letter structure, and typography. As public and available as they may be, they are also ephemeral in both their existence and concept. Seeking longevity and permanence for the existence of my work in an environment other than in public, I have transitioned into fine arts. The stylistic and aesthetic qualities of my graffiti work have remained yet they now carry an additional level of information. The concept of my work derives from my mixed environments; born and raised in Guatemala City and subsequently migrating and living abroad. These works deal with experiences, recollections, and interpretations of tradition, social issues, and everyday life in both environments. Just as the way in which my graffiti paintings are constructed, these ideas may too seem individually far related but my goal is that when seen as a whole, they can construct a personal and social narrative.
